Earth Sea Sky Fabric's

Gelanots®

Earth Sea Sky's true test of Gelanots® began in June 2000 when two intrepid walkers started a honeymoon adventure with a difference, a 319 day walk from Northern Sweden to Southern Spain. Both were armed with bright yellow prototype Gelanots® rain suits using new super-light ripstop Gelanots®

These garments became daily attire as they battled gale force winds and teeming rain, not to mention the worst floods since 1947. The fact that they resembled two comical bananas was of little concern, for they were dry, warm and comfortable.

Gelanots® is Earth Sea Sky's new, high tech, waterproof breathable fabric. It breathes via a molecular transfer of moisture through a non microporous hydrophilic membrane.

Gelanots® is very light and has an extremely soft handle for a laminated three layer (mesh backed) fabric. The outer surface of the fabric has a durable, water repellent finish to enhance breathability, repel stains, and prevent the outer surface of the fabric waterlogging. Gelanots® performed beyond all expectations during the honeymooner's 7,300km odyssey and has now become Earth Sea Sky's premium high performance back packing fabric.

Gelanots® is available in three weights:

1/ 115gram/m² ripstop nylon for super-light multi-sport.
2/ 130gram/m² polyester for lightweight travel.
3/ 160gram/m² nylon for backpacking and heavy duty wear.

All Earth Sea Sky Gelanots® jackets have watertight double flaps over the front zip, seams guaranteed to a 3PSI pressure test and fabric lined external pockets that prevent water coming in contact with the wearer. No compromise is made in the assembling of these garments to obtain a complete watertight construction.

Vent-X®

Earth Sea Sky's heavy duty over trouser Vent-X® fabric is ideal for anything from sub alpine bush bashing to heavy duty work wear.
Vent-X® is another waterproof breathable fabric using a non microporous hydrophilic polymer. The hydrophilic polymer coating is applied in a liquid form to the back of the base cloth allowing it to impregnate into the entire surface of the base cloth. This process obtains extremely high levels of adhesion which means the Vent-X® coating can be left unprotected without the fear of damage.
For over trousers this two-layer fabric construction reduces weight and breathes more efficiently compared to mesh backed three-layer fabrics.
Earth Sea Sky's Vent-X® has a strong nylon base fabric and a durable water-repellent finish on the outside surface to enhance breathability and prevent surface wetting.

The Perfect Thermal Layer

In the outdoor environment fleece is the perfect thermal layer. It is very warm, extremely lightweight and when it gets wet can dry exceptionally fast.
Earth Sea Sky use only the world's best fleece, Polartec®, manufactured in USA by Malden Mills. Polartec® is renown for its superior performance, finish and wear.
Polartec® fleece is 100% polyester. It is knitted and then double-brushed (brushed on both surfaces). This creates a soft, luxurious velour pile and ensures the fibres remain upright to obtain maximum thickness and warmth. To prevent any pilling both surfaces are "sheared" to ensure the pile fibres have an identical length. Other fleece brands are constructed with fibres that lie flat on the under surface. Initially this construction feels thick but these fibres will collapse with washing and wear, resulting in a drastic reduction of the fabric's thermal efficiency.
Earth Sea Sky use three different weights of Polartec® fleece 300, 200 and 100.

Polartec® 300

A luxurious, thick, 360 gram/m², three-jumper warmth, fleece. Virtually wind-resistant in all but the severest conditions, it is a very warm fabric, suitable for any outdoor activity in very cold conditions. Ideal for mountaineering, sailing, winter travelling or cold climate work wear Polartec® 300 garments can be comfortably worn as outerwear on cold, dry days.

Polartec® 300 Sherpa

Sherpa fabric uses Malden Mills' BiPolar Technology® to give each side of the fabric a very different surface.
Inside surface: long, vertical, shaggy pile fibres trap air to maximise warmth.
Outer surface: low-pile, horizontal fibres provide increased wind-resistance and improve abrasion-resistance.
Sherpa fabric is 15% warmer than standard Polartec® fabrics of the same weight.

Polartec® 100

A light, 195 gram/m², single-jumper warmth fleece. Polartec® 100's soft, body-hugging characteristics make it an excellent cool weather, high activity fabric. Its unique, anti-bacterial finish resists all odours and wicks and siphons moisture rapidly to keep an active wearer dry. Polartec® 100 is ideal for thermal undergarments in winter as well as casual outerwear in the warmer seasons.

Micro Fleece
Micro Fleece has a smooth, incredibly soft, luxurious feel. Extremely light and warm Micro Fleece is, knitted and brushed from polyester microfibre. The very dense fabric construction ensures good moisture transfer and wind resistance properties. Micro fleece is ideal for Next-To-Skin thermals or extremely light, non-inhibiting casual outerwear. We use two qualities of Micro Fleece, both are 150gram/m2 in weight and have a single jumper warmth equivalent.

Polartec®

A check patterned, single-brushed micro fleece. The outer matrix surface has been processed to obtain an extremely durable, pill resistant finish.

Tecnopile®

A sensuously thick Micro Fleece from Pontetorto in Italy. Pontetorto is the world's top Micro Fleece manufacturer. Like standard fleece, the quality of Micro Fleece only shows with washing and wear. This single-brushed fabric will show no signs of pilling or wear on its outer surface nor lose its shape or stretch even after years of wear.

Prolite®

Earth Sea Sky purposely design their travel range to make it as street orientated as possible. After surveying the huge travel clothing market they felt most of their potential Prolite® wearers didn't want to look like proverbial tourists. Incognito was the key word.

The fabric in their Prolite® range is a new age, lightweight, "cotton touch" nylon. It is treated with the latest fabric technology that transfers moisture from your skin to keep you comfortable and dry no matter what the heat or humidity. This same treatment also ensures Prolite® dries quickly as moisture in contact with the fabric is spread over the widest possible surface area for maximum evaporation. Cotton or fabrics with a water-repellent treatment cannot emulate this performance. These fast drying characteristics give Prolite® garments overnight "wash and wear" properties. Prolite® fabric is also crease and wrinkle resistant for iron-free wear. Earth Sea Sky's latest Prolite® fabric is now treated with a UV inhibitor to improve the sun protection factor.

Prolite® Shirts use a 90g/m², UPF* 30, fabric chosen for its lightness and soft handle. All collars, cuffs and pocket flaps have internal fusing to maintain their shape and appearance. The buttons are sized for ease of handling.

New in Earth Sea Sky's prolite shirt fabric - ProDRY Plus - using nanotechnology.
Nanotechnology is where changes are made at a molecular level to change the way the material, in this case fabric, performs. In the past fabric function has been enhanced by the application of substances to the surface or weaving of material into the fabric.
ProDRY Plus is:
anti-microbial - this endures after frequent washings inhibiting the growth of bacteria
wicks - a durable quick-dry function with the fabric drying quickly
UPF rated 30+.
The new ProDRY Plus is available in the kalamatta and harbour blue colours as pictured.

Prolite® Trousers, Shorts and Skirts use a heavier, two-way stretch, 140g/m², UPF* 70 fabric. The Trousers are based on a jean cut with a flat front (no pleating). The Convertible Trousers have an elastic insert in the waist-band and the Shorts a single pleat. All these styles have a passport size external pocket on the side of the leg, and two buttoned back pockets. All pocket linings use Prolite® fabric to ensure the garment's overall drying and moisture transfer properties are not compromised. All the trouser waist-bands are finished with bar-tacked belt loops wide enough to fit 40mm wide belts. Both the Capri and the Hipster are low, below the waist styles with adjustable velcro hip bands.

Earth Sea Sky's stretch Prolite®. Very comfortable to wear this fabric is available in latte, lichen and graphite

Prolite® Travel Wear is a durable, easy-care, high performance range, designed to take you to the ends of the earth in comfort and diuise.

Taslan

A lighter version of Nylon Canvas. Taslan is 100% nylon, treated to obtain a soft cotton touch finish. Taslan is wind proof and has a durable, water and dirt repellent Teflon® finish. The reversible Starfish Vest has Taslan on one side and a Tecnopile® Micro Fleece on the other.

Microlight

Feather light protection from both wind and rain. "Silk like" to touch this breathable, windproof micro polyester fabric uses a combination of the very latest silicon and flouropolymer technology to obtain an extremely durable water repellent finish. During our initial testing, water still beaded off the surface after 20 rigorous wash cycles. Impressive enough to label it as a "semi permanent" DWR finish.

A specialised polyester CoolMax® fabric is used as lining. The half brushed half looped surface gives maximum insulation and maximum moisture transfer. It is an ideal high activity lining where rapid cooling and moisture removal is required. The Microban® anti bacterial finish ensures the garment never retains odour.

Weight for warmth the Microlight® garments are our most efficient windshell garments

WindStopper® Fleece

WindStopper® is the world's quality windproof fleece. The combination of W L Gore's internal membrane with Pontetorto's micro fleece ensures a soft-touch, durable fabric that is totally windproof and highly breathable. A WindStopper® fleece garment provides more than twice the warmth in a 30km/hr wind compared with standard fleece.

Performance Next-To-Skin

First Layer® Thermal Wear

Fast drying - Moisture Wicking - Anti Bacterial - Retains Soft Feel.
Our entire First Layer® thermal range is 100% polyester. Since our first trials six years ago we have found polyester based thermals to be superior in many ways. Unlike polypropylene, First Layer® thermal fabric does not pill, become harsh to touch or build up body odour. Our First Layer® thermal wear range has four different fabrics, Silk Weight, Light Weight, 4X4 Stretch and Mid-Weight.
First Layer® Light Weight 4X4 Stretch and Mid-Weight garments use Polartec® Power Dry® fabrics. These fabric types are the most technically advanced next-to-skin fabrics available today. First Layer® Power Dry® thermal wear dries 20% faster than conventional wicking polyesters.

First Layer® Silk Weight

At 100 grams/m² First Layer® Silk Weight is the lightest next-yo-skin, performance fabric available in the world. For active outdoor activities where moisture transferring and fast drying is a priority this fabric is ideal. It can be used as a technical summer weight T Shirt, actively evaporating perspiration into the air, or as a luxurious soft under layer actively transferring moisture to the next layer of clothing. First Layer® Silk Weight, despite its weight, is an effective sun protection layer - it has a UPF rating of 15.
Sleek and very soft to touch, First Layer® Silk Weight uses the latest fibre technology to give the fabric a permanent Dry Fast® moisture transfer finish. This same treatment also gives the fibres a permanent anti-bacterial finish to ensure all body odours are removed during washing.
First Layer® Silk Weight's compactness, fast wash and dry cycle and remarkable crease-free surface makes it perfect for adventure travellers.

First Layer® Light Weight

First Layer ® Lightweight uses a silver fibre technology to eliminate all odour-causing bacteria during wear. The use of natural silver is a clever solution as it eliminates 99.9% of all bacteria in less than one hour of exposure. This is a permanent process that remains during the life of the garment.
First Layer ® Lightweight is a 115 gram/m² Power Dry fabric. The fabric has a 3% silver content and uses a combination of spun and filament fibres to maximise performance and durability. All First Layer ® Lightweight garments have a relaxed fit. First Layer ® Lightweight is an excellent three seasons thermal or for anyone who frequently overheats during heavy physical exertion.

First Layer® 4X4 Stretch

First Layer® 4X4 Stretch uses a very specialised ESP® yarn to give the fabric a natural unrestricted four-way stretch. (ESP® means Extra Stretch Polyester). Constructed identically to the Mid-Weight, this 100% polyester fabric is unique as the 4X4 stretch is a result of the fibre specification and knit construction, not the addition of spandex yarns. The presence of spandex ((lycra®) reduces the moisture transferring, odour repelling and fast drying properties of 100% polyester fabric.
First Layer® 4X4 Stretch is a 145 gram/m² fabric that performs identically to the Mid-Weight fabric. The two-sided stretch fabric has the same soft next-to-skin inner surface and durable non-pill outer surface.
First Layer® 4X4 stretch garments are designed to be closer fitting to maximise the insulation and moisture-transfer properties of the polyester fabric. All garments have low-profile flat-lock seams for greater comfort. First Layer® 4X4 Stretch is an ideal fabric for athletes, multi-sport activities and foundation garments such as briefs, boxers, crop tops and long johns.

First Layer® Mid-Weight

First Layer® Mid-Weight is a 175 gram/m² fabric that offers superior warmth and exceptional moisture siphoning (transfer) from the skin. Mid-Weight fabric is very soft and comfortable and dries very quickly after washing or during wear.
First Layer® Mid-Weight is knitted to obtain a unique double-surface BiPolar fabric. The Next-To-Skin surface is brushed for comfort and treated for moisture transfer. The outer surface has a durable non pill weave constructed for maximum moisture dispersion (fast drying). When combined both surfaces give superior wind resistance and ultra violet sun protection.
The moisture transfer properties are permanently etched in the surface of the polyester fibres. This life long process also gives the fibre the ability to shed all odour and bacteria during washing.

First Layer® Mid-Weight remains soft and supple and will not pill or feel harsh with wear. Even with continuous washing the fabric will maintain its shape.

Natural Next-To-Skin Fabrics

New Zealand Superfine Merino

The 18.5 micron Superfine Merino used in our wool garments is one of the world's finest and rarest natural fibres. As a natural Next-To-Skin fabric Superfine Merino has two very real performance benefits:
